About Us

The EMD F40PH represents one of the most significant chapters in modern passenger railroad history. Often referred to as “the locomotive that saved Amtrak,” the F40PH became the face of American passenger rail for more than two decades, powering trains across the country and helping define the passenger rail experience for millions of travelers.

Today, these historic locomotives are rapidly disappearing as more F40PHs are retired, scrapped, or lost to time. Recognizing the importance of preserving this legacy, the F40PH Preservation Society was founded with the mission of protecting and celebrating the history of these iconic locomotives.

Based in Massachusetts, the F40PH Preservation Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving railroad history and artifacts, with a special focus on Amtrak’s F40PH fleet. Through historical research, collection, restoration, display, demonstration, and public education, we work to ensure that the story of the F40PH and its impact on passenger rail history continues to be shared with future generations.

Our goal is not only to preserve the locomotives themselves, but also the memories, experiences, and history connected to them.
